Nuclear reactor VVR-SM

On September 10, 1959, for the first time in Central Asia, the WWR-S research nuclear reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics with a capacity of 2 MW reached criticality.
In order to increase the density of neutron fluxes and expand its experimental capabilities in 1971-1978, the core was reconstructed, which made it possible to increase the rated power of the reactor to 10 MW. The reactor used IRT-3M fuel highly enriched in uranium-235 (90%). Reconstruction of the reactor allowed the production of radioisotopes for medicine.
In February 1999, for the first time in the world among Soviet-made reactors, the VVR-SM research reactor switched to using IRT-3M fuel highly enriched in uranium-235 (36%).
From November 2000 to March 2002, the IRT-4M type fuel, developed by the I. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, was tested in the VVR-SM reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics..

This project is co-funded by the European Union

The project “Safety in Operation of the Research Reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (Phase II)” aims to strengthen the safe operation of the research reactor VVR-SM in accordance with new international standards. In 2010-2013 Within the framework of the project of the IAEA and the European Union Technical Cooperation Department TS UZB / 9/005, the control and protection system, instrumentation, which have been used since the commissioning of the reactor (1959), were replaced. The new control and protection system is essential for safe operation of the new low enriched fuel reactor core. As an additional task, it was decided to replace heat exchangers, pipelines and pumps that have been in operation for more than 45 years. As part of the TS UZB / 1/001 project, a technical specification has been developed for replacing pipelines and secondary pumps, beryllium reflectors and process ventilation.
